Il a été co-fondateur de l’Institut d’études Palestine (IPS), établi à Beyrouth en décembre 1963 en tant que centre de recherche et d’édition indépendant axé sur le problème de Palestine et le conflit israélo-arabe, et a été son secrétaire général jusqu’en 2016. Le premier poste d’enseignant de Khalidi était à Oxford, poste dont il a démissionné en 1956 pour protester contre l’invasion britannique de Suez. Il a été professeur d’études politiques à l’Université américaine de Beyrouth jusqu’en 1982 et ensuite chercheur au Harvard Center for International Affairs. Il a également enseigné à l’université de Princeton.
